Re: [HumJanenge] Uncovering of Truth - IE Story of Suggesting an Attempted Army Coup Needs Investigation

Dear Sarbajit,

Pl see my comments in red.

The real questions are two :-

(a) What was the motive of the move ?

(b) How an operational move of the Army troops is known to only Shekhar Gupta out side of the Army whereas such operational moves are supposed to be kept secret in the interest of the security of the country ?

The answer to the first question has been adequately given by PM, RM, MoD, Army and all the TV panelists yesterday.

It is the second question which is the cause of real worry. The move of an Army unit is just known to only their parent HQs. No other unit and HQ even in the services knows about such move. This is amazing that Shekhar Gupta has access to such secret information and that he has authentic sources who have told him that the political brass and bureaucrats were scared and that the police were hurriedly asked to put barricades to delay the move of the unit and that the real intent was to create  a scare in the political class and MoD.

If he had such inputs then he like a loyal citizen first and a very well known journalist should have sought a meeting with PM/RM and conveyed to them rather than writing a story about it. In case PM/RM do not act then he has a full right to write this in the newspaper. Shekhar Gupta needs to clarify this.

I am suggesting that the members of HJ Gp should give their general views as to whether there needs to be an independent inquiry. To my mind in such sensitive national interests, no one should get away if it is found that the story has been planted and not true. If true let the guilty be tried out as per the law. If planted then also the guilty be tried out as per law.

My suggestion is that we should not link this story with any PIL etc. The public needs to know the truth. Alternatively, Shekhar Gupta can clarify his position or give the names of the people to the PM/RM. When a citizen who either harbours  terrorists or hides the information about them can be tried out in a court, why does Shekhar Gupta not come out with the names as this is a serious matter no less than a potential treason. He has no excuse that he wants to protect the identity of the people who have told him about this. If those people are loyalists they should be rewarded and if traitors they should be punished. Shekhar Gupta in either case would have done a yeoman service to the nation by coming out clearer on this story.

Some time, in the interest of the nation, one does not disclose every thing to public but here Shekhar Gupta has chosen to go public and thus he needs to come out with sources of the story for further investigation.

With warm regards,

Col Mahesh Khera

Dear Rahul

Has anybody, as yet, publicly disagreed or disproved what Shekhar Gupta wrote ?.

Yes, PM, RM, Def Secy, Army and all panelists on national TV have trashed Shekhar Gupta's suggestion.

1) Did the army movements in question take place or not ? Yes. Who ordered them ? Their authorized formation commanders,
2) Were the movements curtailed / countermanded ? The troops movement is kept secret as per the prevailing operational rules. Who countermanded them ? Only people who need to know are kept informed.
3) Why does Mr Devashayam HIDE from us that he is one of the
petitioners in the SC now asking for V.K.Singh to "carry on" as Army
Chief ? Will he share with us the Petition that he has filed ? This is irrelevant to IE story.
4) Lastly, it is evident that Mr Devashayam knows hardly anything
about how matters are handled in SC. I OTH have been appearing there
(albeit intermittently) for albeit 30 years now, and I can sense that
V.K.Singh had to "withdraw" his petition because he was on legally
weak ground. IMHO as an old soldier he "ran away to fight another
day". Again this is irrelevant to Shekhar Gupta and IE story.

We are all committed to the LARGER CAUSE,  its the "running dogs" we
have to be careful of. True and highly appreciate this.
