You are absolutely correct about how the honorifics ought to be (and
very often are) used. I am sure that your observations as a
practicising advocate are true for many courts / benches.
OTH, I have often observed "out of town" / small-time advocates
struggling to plead before some very supercilious judges in SC and
High Courts. Since their Lordship's sarcasms and Oxbridge diction is
wasted on such advocates (who are permitted to practice in any court
of India including the Supreme Court) Milords always observe the basic
courtesy of describing his heroic efforts in flattering terms so that
the "Ld. Counsel" can prominently frame the order on his office wall
back in JhumriTalaya, double his fees, and ensures that he never sets
foot in their Court again.
PS; I say this as a "litigant in person" for about 30 years now,
