At the COVID wards in the various government hospitals the oxygen cylinders are being reportedly handled by all and sundry including police personnel. This is totally unacceptable and being very dangerous must immediately stop. A designated team of experienced technicians must be entrusted the task of handling the oxygen cylinders and augmenting its flow.
The doctors, nurses and multi task workers tirelessly working for over a year at the various Covid wards seem to be physically and mentally exhausted which is perhaps taking the toll on their performance. Those working on the night shift starting at 8 pm due to the sheer overload of patients seem to be wrecked by the early hours of the morning which possibly could be the reason why there are so many deaths of patients between 2 am and 6 am. The authorities should consider posting additional staff in these precarious wards during these hours to supplement and tide up the work load.
Those working at the hospitals are humans and should be humanely treated as they so dedicatedly work trying to save lives while risking their own. We are going through exceptional times and the government would have to adopt a practical and flexible protocol in handling the logistics in this mega battle against this vicious virus which is claiming so many lives everyday.
Unless the Government shows leadership by putting in place a robust and flexible plan to proactively respond to the serious challenges after taking and abiding by expert medical advice, it will always play second fiddle to the rampant virus and the destructive trail of human tragedy it leaves behind. It must ensure that it urgently well equips all hospitals and medical centers with adequate human resources and expertise besides with the necessary equipment needed to treat both patients and our front line warriors with dignity, care and a chance of survival.
