Padayatras for voters' awareness on Dec. 18, 23 - Special Correspondent, The Hindu, Mysore, Karnataka, December 17, 2013

Making Democracy Work (MDW), a people's campaign aimed at bringing about awareness among the voters, reducing corruption, and engaging with political parties on issues of development in the run-up to the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, will be organising a padayatra on December 18 and 23, 2013.

The December 18, 2013 padayatra will be flagged off from Gun House Circle (near JSS Mahavidyapeeta) here at 8 a.m. It will cover 19.7 km to reach Jaypura. The December 23, 2013 padayatra will be held from Periyapatna to Ravandur, a distance of 20 km, according to a release.

MDW is an initiative of Vivekananda Institute for Leadership Development (V-LEAD), a unit of Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM), Mysore. The campaign is an attempt to strengthen democracy and facilitate good governance through a free and fair election process.

It is led by R. Balasubramaniam, founder-chairman of the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement, Mysore. It was launched on October 22, 2013. An advisory committee of eminent personalities had been formed to guide and monitor MDW-LS 14 campaign in the coming days, the release said.

Now, the MDW team wants to engage with voters on issues of corruption in elections, fair elections, selecting the right candidates, and other aspects, in the second phase.

The objectives of the campaign are to create awareness among the general public about democracy and importance of participation in elections; engage with people from all sectors - government, corporate, NGOs - and make it a people-led campaign; motivate all young and new voters to register for voting and motivate them to vote; engage with and sensitise the media towards playing a positive role in facilitating free and fair elections; engage with political parties and advocate on including a people-centric, sustainable and holistic development agenda in their manifestos, the release stated.
