Re: [IAC#RG] AFTER SOUND NOW THE LIGHT SHOW, WHAT NEXT?

Regarding Shri Narendra Talwar's admonitions to advocate Rodriques, although several jyotishis have explained why the.celestial configurations around 5th April were important, we also know it commemorated the 40th anniversary of formation of the BJP after AB Vajpayee and LK Advani exited the Janata Party. They announced the setting up of their new party at exactly 9pm on 5th April at Ferozeshah Kotla grounds in Delhi. The BJP was formally registered as a party the next day, on 6th April.

Hence I was not enthused by the idea of dancing obediently to any tune struck by our irresponsible leaders who are like wolves in khadi, or performing artists, using the misery of India's poor to beg for money from the rest of the world. One can only heed the advice and accept the information offered by specialists in the field, practicing medical doctors -  not medical bureaucrats - and experienced virologists, or the sage instructions of one's own gurus and mentors who are learned, compassionate and wise.

Did lighting those lamps signify anything for the millions who may have done it other than wishing for their own families and biradaries' wellbeing? When we think of this nation, do we remember the agony millions of poor, daily wage labour faced at the sudden announcement of a lockdown?

These unorganised labourers and small service providers are the ones who build our cities, grow our food for us, man our factories and small industries, clean our nuclear power plants and sewers, and carry out innumerable essential tasks and trades that bring comfort to urban people.

Evicted overnight from their tenements, thrown out of their jobs, with no food or shelter to speak of, and no thought by this government for their survival or safety, they had to simply trek home, 250-1500 Kms away in Bihar, Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, UP and Rajasthan. There is no work for them there once they reach home and they may.well be a bigger risk factor in spreading the virus in their families back home than the foolish Tablighis the goverment has singled out to pillory. Google can track each person's movements and call records to ascertain their present whereabouts, contacts and health status as it is already doing for the rest of us to map compliance of different population groups with lockdown restrictions. But state and  city governments have no knowledge of how many wage labourers actually live and work in their cities and states.

I don't think this awful tragedy that bad central and state government policy and hopeless planning has inflicted on millions of poor Indian workers, including countless women domestic workers sent home summarily, was something to celebrate or send firecrackers off to commemorate at 9-9.15 pm last night.

Dear Mr Rodrigues,

I notice that you are critical of nearly every that the Govt does, be it Centre or Goa State. Is that being fair?

In the initial part of your mail you have criticized/ made a joke of the 9 minute lighting by saying it is waste of time and tomfoolery. Then you have mellowed down as you proceed further.
No one has said not to pray and only light for 9 mins. Continue to pray, but just spare 9 mins in addition to prayers.
You must be lighting candles in the Church and at home on several occasions. Just add this one more for once for the sake of self, family, near and dear ones, Goa and the nation.

Thank you and Regards

After asking us to clap our hands and bang metal on March 22nd, we are now told to light candles today for nine minutes. But will that candlelight uplift the spirit of the common man who is now so distraught?

Instead of wasting our time in such tomfoolery, let us today and every  pray for our doctors, nurses and support staff who, while risking their own lives, are caring for those infected with COVID-19. So many doctors have already lost their lives in this battle. Every Doctor has lived up to the Hippocratic Oath that guides the noble profession.

In this current crisis people are in no mood for empty rhetoric, but want direction and reassurance while wanting to know how the government plans to extricate the nation from this current economic morass and whether we can protect those thousands of jobs in the organized and unorganized sector. There can be no room for symbolism. The government must undertake concrete measures to ease the pain and suffering of the poor and impoverished while the focus undoubtedly has to be on the homeless.

May the candles that the nation has been called on to illuminate the darkness in our lives for nine minutes also shed the much  needed light on our rulers to guide them to a more effective way of dealing with this pandemic rather than some of the chaos that people have needlessly endured due to poor planning.

At this critical juncture in our history, in this matter of life and death situation sweeping across our nation and the world, every moment, every effort, every resource, every protective medical and scientific equipment must be concentrated on supporting our front line staff and our people with the sole aim of defeating the corona virus.

Lighting of candles represents rays of hope where there is nothing but darkness and may have the intention of providing a means of social strengthening. Let us hope that it is backed up by positive leadership and action, otherwise it may end up as merely a nine-minute wonder for some.

Our primary objective and priority must always be to ensure that all our people are kept safe, healthy, nourished and economically viable whilst at the same time meeting the World Health Organisation guidelines of safe distancing and personal hygiene.

As Edith Wharton the American novelist once observed. 'There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it'.
