FAST UNTO DEATH – ITS VALIDITY & RELEVANCE

Dear Satyagrahi members, Supporting members and Moral supporters,

About two years ago, I received from Gujarat the following feed-back from an esteemed Freedom Fighter and a Satyagrahi member:

"No amount of Satyagraha howsoever prolonged is going to have any effect on the Union Government unless you find some Satyagrahi to fast unto death for the cause you have been struggling for so many years. If even then the Government does not implement their promises, you shall have done your duty."

I immediately responded as under:

"Why should I go in search of such a Satyagrahi prepared to die for the cause of ethics and morality in the Nation's politics? I will be that Satyagrahi myself"

2. In resolving to take this extreme step, I was pleasantly surprised to find that four or five members of GSB, as 'mad' as myself were prepared to join me in undertaking the fast. I told them that I will not allow any Satyagrahi member less than 60/65 years to join me because 'they must live to fight another day' and that I will restrict the number to five including myself. At 92, I am the eldest of them all though the majority are in the age group of 80-90 years. I cautioned them regarding the fiery ordeal ahead and told them to withdraw if they so liked and that after such withdrawal we shall still stay the best of friends, but I found that some of them were determined to join me; (for their names please see page 5).

3. In deciding as above I found unequivocal support from Mahatma Gandhi, the Author of Satyagraha and Father of the Nation as under:

(i) "PLACE OF CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE; it can be offered without regard to effect, though aimed at a particular wrong or evil, by way of self-immolation in order to rouse local consciousness or conscience..... Civil disobedience can never be directed for a general cause such as Independence. The issue must be definite and capable of being clearly understood and within the power of the opponent to yield."

(ii) "I am not aching for martyrdom, but if it comes my way in the prosecution of what I consider to be the supreme duty in defence of the faith I hold.... I shall have earned it."  – M.K. Gandhi

Accordingly, we shall request the Govt. to give the Nation a reasonable time-frame for implementing the three vital recommendations of ARC re: Lok Pal, Disqualification of candidates and Confiscation of illegally acquired property, failing which our fasts unto death shall commence w.e.f. 2nd October 2010.

Regards,

Sincerely,

Shambhu Dutta,

Hony. General Secretary, GSB
