The women employee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)
will now be entitled to six months' maternity leave instead of the
earlier provision of three months'.
Following a PIL in the Bombay High Court and several remarks against
the civic body, the BMC has finally amended its municipal rules and
allowed 180 days of maternity leave to its woman staff against 90
days' as was the case before.
The BMC in its general body meeting on October 14 approved the
amendment and accordingly the employees will be getting the benefit.
The state government had on August 24, 2009, passed a resolution
stating that as per the suggestion made by the Sixth Pay Commission,
the Centre has amended the rules, and accordingly the women employees
of the state government have been allotted 180 days of maternity
leave.
A Right to Information (RTI) activist, Nainesh Dolas, had moved the
High Court stating BMC is not implementing the resolution. Lawyer
Neeta Karnik appearing for Dolas had argued the Thane Municipal
Corporation and the Kalyan Dombivali Corporation had already made the
necessary amendments in their rules but the BMC hadn't. "There are so
many employees who have to travel from far-off places in trains and it
causes inconvenience to them," she said.
