Janata Dal (S) leader H.D. Revanna on Monday urged Governor H R.
Bhardwaj to seek the resignation of Speaker K.G. Bopaiah in view of
irregularities such as drawing house rent allowances for two posts
last year.

Claiming that details of the salary were obtained through RTI Act, Mr
Revanna told media persons that the previous Speaker, Jagadish
Shettar, resigned in November 2009 and Mr Bopaiah, who was the deputy
Speaker, was elevated to fill the vacancy in December 2009.

"The Speaker is supposed to protect and provide justice to 224 MLAs.
How can a person, who draws allowances for two posts, even if it is
for two months, accepts the resignation of a MLA at 3.30 am, someone
who does not order inquiry into violence instigated by the home
minister on October 11, bang on the doors of Vidhana Soudha, be
expected to protect and provide justice to the legislators?" he asked.

He urged Mr Bhardwaj to safeguard the image of the Speaker by asking
Mr Bopaiah to resign, and urged the Lokayukta to take suo motu action
against the Speaker.

Mr Revanna argued that Mr Bopaiah drew the house rent allowance
despite being allotted a VIP room in the Legislators Home. He added
that previous Speakers like Jagadish Shettar and S.M. Krishna did not
draw the allowances.

When contacted, Mr Bopaiah said he would provide documents when Mr
Shettar had drawn rentals for the rooms in LH. "I am entitled for Rs
500,000 per month as allowance but I have drawn only Rs 200,000. I am
entitled for four cars but I have utilised only two," he said.
